CANCER SERVICES

THE PETER AND PAULA FASSEAS CANCER CLINIC

In early January of 2007, University Medical Center began providing cancer care in its new 30,000 sq. ft. PETER AND PAULA FASSEAS CANCER CLINIC at its UMC North Campus. This beautiful, well-appointed, state-of-the-art clinical building is designed specifically to provide care to UMC patients in the most comfortable and accommodating environment possible. (Click on “Fasseas Cancer Clinic” at right.) Also, it is the first of several scheduled buildings that will make UMC North unique: an entire campus dedicated to the treatment of cancer.

The Fasseas Clinic is the new home to the clinical activities of the Arizona Cancer Center, since 1990 designated by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) as a “Comprehensive Cancer Center” in recognition of its outstanding record of research, clinical care, and education. It is one of only 41 centers in America to bear the “Comprehensive” designation, which means that patients there will have their care delivered by specialists who are unsurpassed in their areas of expertise. Many techniques developed by the Arizona Cancer Center have become standards of care worldwide, and several anti-cancer drugs developed there are being used in clinical trials around the nation.

UMC’s marvelous new clinic bears the name of Peter and Paula Fasseas because of a substantial commitment by Mr. and Mrs. Fasseas toward the construction cost of the building. Many other attractive naming opportunities within and around the clinic remain, and you may view them and their respective gift values by clicking on “Cancer Clinic Naming Opportunities” at right.

CARDIOLOGY SERVICES

The internationally-recognized physicians and researchers in UMC’s Cardiology Program are specialists in diagnosing and treating cardiovascular diseases. The diagnostic cardiology team performs a broad array of testing procedures, which are interpreted and correlated with clinical data to arrive at the appropriate diagnoses. Some diagnostic tests are also performed in the UMC Nuclear Medicine Department. In addition to diagnoses, UMC specialists perform a wide variety of cardiothoracic surgeries and other procedures, such as angiograms. Also, UMC prominently features an extensive cardiac rehabilitation program.

UMC is allied on its campus with the Sarver Heart Center, which embraces more than 100 physicians and scientists who collaborate to prevent heart disease and stroke. Conducting the majority of cardiovascular research in Arizona, including use of the artificial heart, the world-renowned Sarver Heart team searches for innovative ways to prevent heart disease, improve treatments of it and develop cures for it.

TRANSPLANT

COMPREHENSIVE TRANSPLANTATION CENTER (ADULT AND PEDIATRIC)

TRAUMA SERVICES

TRAUMA means serious injury, and it includes such injuries as bone fractures, internal bleeding, and brain injuries. Trauma is most frequently caused by automobile crashes, falls and violence. A TRAUMA CENTER is a highly-organized hospital program for the IMMEDIATE treatment of the seriously injured — IMMEDIATE because the greatest enemy of a seriously-injured person is TIME.

UMC is Southern Arizona’s ONLY “Level I” trauma program and one of the highest-rated trauma programs in the nation. Also, it ranks Number One in the nation among university trauma centers in several key outcomes, such as patient survival, low cost, and brevity of stay. In the UMC Trauma Center, a trauma surgeon is immediately available and the trauma team is poised for immediate response 24 hours a day, every day. In addition to the trauma surgeon, the trauma team includes other surgeons, emergency-medicine physicians, trauma nurses and therapists.

The UMC Trauma Program cares for approximately 4,800 patients each year, of which about 1,700 are seriously injured. These patients come from Tucson, Southern Arizona, western New Mexico and northern Mexico.

TRAUMA SERVICES FUNDS

THE TRAUMA/EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT CAMPAIGN FUND provides significant funding for the construction of urgently-needed new facilities to house UMC’s Trauma Center and Emergency Department.

THE TRAUMA SERVICES DEVELOPMENT FUND actively supports the UMC Trauma Program’s work generally.

THE CECIL FAMILY “GOLDEN HOUR” GOLF CLASSIC is hosted annually by former University of Arizona All American football player CHUCK CECIL and his family; the tournament’s proceeds benefit the UMC Trauma Program and the Southern Arizona Trauma Network (SATNET). See “Special Events” link at right.

THE NOGALES MEDICAL EMERGENCY UNIT FUND supports a new unit at the General Hospital in Nogales, Sonora, Mexico; a bi-national, public/private effort created the unit, which serves people on both sides of the international border.

THE AGUA PRIETA MEDICAL EMERGENCY UNIT FUND assists with the development of a new medical emergency unit and enhanced neonatal services in Agua Prieta, Sonora, Mexico.
