Electrophysiology (EP)
This is a specialty field within cardiology that studies the mechanism(s) and treatment of heart rhythm problems (arrhythmias). An electrophysiologist is a cardiologist with additional training and expertise in the diagnosis and therapy of arrhythmias.
In general, treatment options for heart rhythm disorders may consist of medication, catheter ablation, placement of a pacemaker or implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD).
Atrial fibrillation is a particular heart rhythm disorder that affects many people as they get older.
