Greg Pivirotto, longtime president and chief executive officer of University Medical Center, announced today that he is retiring effective Jan. 31, 2010.
Under Mr. Pivirotto’s 21 years of leadership, UMC has become a nationally recognized center of excellence and he leaves a legacy of accomplishments. Earlier this month, UMC was ranked among the Ten Best Hospitals in the United States by Becker Hospital Review magazine, and for the past two years UMC has been recognized among the top five academic medical centers for quality and safety by the University Healthcare Consortium. UMC has been a Thomson Reuters Top 100 Hospital for the past four years, and is one of only 23 U.S. hospitals to receive the prestigious Everest Award from Thomson Reuters. The Everest Award recognizes hospital leadership for the fastest and most consistent rate of improvement over a five-year period. In addition, UMC was the first Magnet Nursing Hospital in Arizona.
Chairman of the Board Judy Gignac stated, “Greg Pivirotto has given his total commitment to the organization and all who know him will miss his experience, leadership, and deeply held affection for UMC and the people who make it work. Although it has always been a team effort to ensure that our values of quality, safety and financial strength are continuously at work throughout the organization, it takes a highly skilled leader to create the cohesion necessary to the success of such a complex institution.”
Mr. Pivirotto is pleased that the UMC Board of Directors followed the succession plan that was developed several years ago in appointing the hospital’s Chief Financial Officer Kevin Burns to succeed him as UMC president and CEO.
“Kevin has been my CFO and right-hand person for the past seven years and he will continue the tradition of strong leadership at UMC,” Mr. Pivirotto said. “It has been an honor and a privilege to serve UMC for the past 21 years and I will miss the people who are the essence of the institution. Our culture has been one of integrity, compassion, quality and leadership and I am confident these characteristics will continue to be the cornerstone of UMC’s future success.”
