University Medical Center announces its 2010 education classes for new and expectant parents at the hospital at 1501 N. Campbell Ave. Classes range from $15 to $100 and many health insurance plans, including AHCCCS, cover the cost entirely.
Hypnobirthing® Course – The Mongan Method
This comprehensive course educates you and your partner on nutrition, posture, breath, relaxation, visualization, deepening, protecting your birth environment, creating a birth plan, pre-birth and postpartum bonding and what to expect throughout all phases of labor. You will learn how to achieve deep relaxation, free of the challenges that fear creates, and how to use your natural birthing instincts for a calm, serene and comfortable birth.
This method teaches you that, in the absence of fear and tension, or special medical circumstances, severe pain does not have to play a role in labor. Sign up as early in your pregnancy as possible to attend this series of five 2 ½ hour classes as the more you practice, the better for your birth. Your instructor is a Nationally Certified HypnoBirthing® Practitioner, Massage Therapist and Certified Birth Doula. Classes start January 4, February 22, April 19, June 7, July 26, September 13, November 15. Cost is $100 for the 5-week series.
Lamaze Childbirth Education
This class covers many topics, including healthy pregnancy, nutrition, physiology of the normal labor process, complications of labor, anesthesia and analgesia, breathing and relaxation skills, comfort measures for labor, Caesarean birth, early breastfeeding, newborn appearance, how to be a great labor partner and more.
Classes meet one evening a week for six weeks and include a hospital tour of UMC’s labor-and-delivery unit, maternity unit and newborn nursery. Lamaze classes start: January 14, February 2, February 10, March 4, March 23, March 31, April 22, May 11, May 19, June 10, June 29, July 7, July 29, August 17, August 25, September 16, October 5, October 13, November 4, November 23, December 1.
Weekend Lamaze sessions are offered on these weekends: January 16 & 17, February 6 & 7, March 6 & 7, April 10 & 11, May 1 & 2, May 22 & 23, June 26 & 27, July 24 & 25, August 21 & 22, September 18 & 19, October 16 & 17, November 6 & 7, December 11 & 12. The cost is $60 for the six-week series or the weekend class.
Breastfeeding Class
This class teaches expectant mothers how to get their baby to the breast for the first time, proper positioning techniques, nutrition for the breastfeeding mother and how to assess the wellbeing of their breastfed baby. This $25 Breastfeeding Class is offered January 12, February 9, March 9, April 13, May 11, June 8, July 13, August 10, September 14, October 12, November 9, December 14.
Spotlight on Big Brother or Big Sister
This is a fun and informative class for children ages 3-10 years to help prepare siblings for the arrival of a new baby in the family. Children will be able to tour UMC’s labor-and-delivery unit and newborn nursery, see what new babies look like and learn what to do to help with the baby. This $15 class is offered January 15, March 19, May 21, June 14, July 16, August 9, September 17, October 11, November 12, December 13.
Great Beginnings Infant Care
Learn what to anticipate during the first hours postpartum, the milestones to watch for in your baby’s development, and the latest information on home and car safety. This $15 class is offered January 25, March 12, April 19, May 14, June 7, July 9, August 2, September 10, October 4, November 5, December 6.
Infant and Child Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
Learn CPR techniques approved by the American Heart Association if a baby or child stops breathing. Class offered January 7, January 28, February 18, March 11, April 1, April 22, May 13, June 3, June 24, July 15, August 5, August 26, September 16, October 7, October 28, November 18, December 9. This class costs $20 per person or $30 per couple.
Baby Massage
In the Baby Massage class, parents will learn full body massage and an acupressure routine for the health of the baby. This class includes hand-on learning as well as information on oils, creams, lotions & aromatherapy safety and is for babies from birth to 6 months of age. Class meets on Tuesday evening for four weeks from 5-6:30 pm. Taught by a Nationally Certified Massage Therapist and the author of your class booklet: “Baby Massage, a Booklet for Babies and Their Parents.” Cost: $40.00. Classes scheduled on demand. Free Maternity Tour at UMC
A free maternity tour is available for the parents to view the hospital’s labor-and-delivery unit, maternity unit and the newborn nursery. Maternity tours are offered Monday evenings on January 4, January 18, February 1, February 15, March 1, March 15, April 5, April 19, May 3, May 17, June 7, June 21, July 5, July 19, August 2, August 16, September 13, September 27, October 4, October 18, November 1, November 15, December 6, December 20.

University Medical Center and the University of Arizona Steele Children’s Research Center are working together to build Diamond Children’s Medical Center, scheduled to open April 2010. Diamond Children's will be Arizona’s only pediatric inpatient medical center connected to an academic research facility, the Steele Center.
