Effective Feb. 1, Kevin Burns, the hospital’s chief financial officer since 2002, is the hospital’s new president and chief executive officer, succeeding Greg Pivirotto, who retired last month. Mr. Pivirotto had led the hospital since 1994.
Mr. Burns shepherded UMC through three bond issues totaling $254 million to support the hospital’s rapid growth and expansion, paving the way for the construction of the Arizona Cancer Center at UMC North, the hospital's new Trauma Center and Emergency Department and the six-floor Diamond Building, which will house Diamond Children's Medical Center, set to open this spring.
Mr. Burns also developed new policies, among the first in the nation, that offer uninsured and underinsured patients the same steep discounts for hospital care at UMC that Medicare patients receive. He also created and implemented a plan in which employees earn incentive pay when they contribute to UMC's goal of reducing hospital-acquired infections.
A champion of workplace fitness and an avid cyclist, Mr. Burns helped devise a plan that rewards UMC employees for meeting fitness goals. At Mr. Burns' urging, UMC became the title sponsor of El Tour de Tucson two years ago, and has completed the race about a dozen times.
In November he received the Healthcare Industry Special Achievement Award from the Arizona chapter of the Financial Executives International at its CFO of the Year awards ceremony.
Mr. Burns earned his accounting degree from Arizona State University in 1981 and became a CPA in 1984. Before joining UMC he spent 17 years with Arthur Andersen, specializing in health-care organizations. He also served as an adjunct professor of accounting at the University of Arizona on several occasions from 2003-2006.
Misty Darling Hansen, the hospital’s chief accounting officer, is UMC’s new chief financial officer. She joined UMC in 2001 and has worked on a host of financial initiatives at the hospital.
Ms. Hansen, a CPA, received her bachelor’s degree in financial services and economics from St. Mary’s College of California in 1994 and her master’s in business administration from the University of Phoenix in 2008. She is a past president and current board member of Pima Community Access Program, a bridge to health care for the uninsured.
University Medical Center is a not-for-profit teaching hospital affiliated with the UA Colleges of Medicine, Nursing and Pharmacy and the UA Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health. In 2009 UMC was ranked among the 10 best hospitals in the United States by Becker’s Hospital Review magazine, and for the past two years UMC has been recognized among the top five academic medical centers for quality and safety by the University Healthcare Consortium. UMC employs approximately 4,000 people, including more than 1,000 registered nurses.
