UMC Among U.S. News & World Report’s 2010-11 Best Hospitals
2010
University Medical Center, now part of University of Arizona Healthcare, has been ranked 48th among thousands of hospitals in the United States for the treatment of pulmonary disease in U.S. News & World Report's 2010-11 Best Hospitals edition, available on newsstands July 27.
Pulmonology is the treatment of disease of the lungs, such as asthma, chronic bronchitis, emphysema, pulmonary fibrosis and COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). UMC treats these and many other pulmonary conditions in affiliation with the physician-scientists of the Arizona Respiratory Center, a center of excellence at the University of Arizona College of Medicine. Since its inception in 1971, the Arizona Respiratory Center has evolved into an internationally renowned, comprehensive center combining the highest caliber of research, clinical care and teaching.
“We’re proud to see UMC included again this year among U.S. News’ Best Hospitals,” said University of Arizona Healthcare Interim President and CEO Kevin Burns. “It’s a testament to the quality and experience of our physicians, nurses and entire staff.”
UMC’s top pulmonary ranking was driven by data such as death rates, procedure volume, and balance of nurses and patients. Best hospitals first had to meet at least one of four criteria:
Be a teaching hospital;
Be affiliated with a medical school;
Have at least 200 beds, or
Have 100 or more beds and the availability of four or more types of medical technology considered important in a high-quality medical facility, such as a PET/CT scanner and certain precision radiation therapies.
“When the stakes are high, you want the best care you can get for yourself or someone close to you,” said U.S. News Health Rankings Editor Avery Comarow. “These hospitals are accustomed to seeing the sickest patients day in and day out.”
University Medical Center is a 469-bed teaching hospital associated with the UA College of Medicine – Tucson. Earlier this month UMC and University Physicians Healthcare, the physicians group of UA College of Medicine faculty who manage UPH Hospital at Kino campus, announced an integration of the two organizations into a new corporation, University of Arizona Healthcare Inc.
